Adoption requirements
- Own your home or have permission from the property owner or manager to have pets.
- Understand that adopting a Hope Haven cat or kitten is committing to care for that animal for its whole life. Some cats live up to and beyond 20 years. Do you have a plan to provide for the care of the Hope Haven pet for up to and beyond 20 years?
- Agree to keep the Hope Haven cat or kitten as an indoor only pet. Cats that go outdoors are at risk of being hit by cars, killed by other animals, lost, stolen, poisoned, exposed to illness, contracting fleas and other parasites. Hope Haven does not object to cats and kittens going outside on a properly fitted harness and leash or in a fully enclosed catio, with proper supervision. Even when on a leash or in an enclosed catio cats are at greater risk of getting fleas or other parasites and injury from other animals.
- Agree to allow your Hope Haven cat or kitten to keep their claws. Cats or kittens can learn to stretch their toes and use their claws on appropriate cat scratching furniture. Love and patience are required. Declawing is never the solution.
- Understand that Hope Haven knows that emergencies happen and sometimes life takes a sharp turn in a different direction that can make it difficult or impossible for you to continue to care for your Hope Haven pet. If that happens, you should call us. We will do everything we can, resources depending, to help keep you with your pet. If that isn’t an option we will take the cat back into our care.
Things to consider before you adopt:
- Does everyone in your household want a new pet?
- If you rent or live in a managed community (condo association), does the property owner or manager allow pets in the home?
- Are you adopting this pet for your child or children? Are you prepared to provide the care for this pet if your child doesn’t?
- If you have other pets in your home, are they current on their vaccines?
- Can you afford to care for the pet you would like to adopt? The cost of your new pet is much more than the adoption fee. The estimated annual cost for providing basic care of a cat is $700 to $1000 per year. Add the potential cost of toys, grooming, boarding and vet expenses if the cat gets sick and the annual cost can far exceed this estimate.
- Do you have time to spend exercising and training your new cat or kitten? Cats and kittens can have a lot of energy. They will need someone to play with so they can burn off that energy
